How to Find Your Skin Tone (and all things related)

Hallllo there, readers! Today I will be discussing the very important concept of skin tone, undertones, and how to find them. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT SUBJECT. It's pretty much life and death, in the beauty world. You must know what your skin tone is, and undertones. It decides whether you look good or not! In clothing and makeup and hair and, and, and... Lots of stuffs.

...

Onward ho!

First off:

What is the difference between skin tone and undertone? This idea is most commonly misinterpreted in the beauty books. What I believe to be true is that "skin tone" is when people are talking about dark, medium, and light/fair. When they are talking about your "undertone," it means the reference of cool vs. warm. Skin tones have a range of descriptions, but these are the few that are I have narrowed it down to, the fairest of the fair to the darkest of the dark.

What is cool vs. warm colors? I bet you've all learned about the color wheel, and how cool colors are blue, green, and purple. Warm colors are red, orange, and yellow. In your skin, it's usually when you either have a blue or yellow undertone in their skin.

Dude. I'm not Spongebob or a Smurf. What gives? Heh, this tricked me the first (few) time around. Here are a few tricks to determine whether you have cool or warm undertones:

  • Look at your wrist/inside of your elbow. What color do you see? If you see greenish veins, you're probably strutting your warm stuff, like me! If you see bluish veins, then you're a cool cat. ;) Why is this? Well, Yellow+blue maketh blue. Veins are blue, and viewed through skin with yellow undertones= green! ZOMG.

  • If you're not sure yet, try this trick. What jewelry looks best on you? Gold? Silver? Or copper? Which one makes you just look better, warm, radiant? Which is more flattering? If silver and white metals looks best on you, you probably have cool undertones. If gold looks best, you have warm undertones. And if copper looks best, then you most likely have neutral undertones.

Generally warm undertones have prominent yellow in their skin (such as some Asians and some with African descent), and in lighter skinned people who don't burn as easily, but tan. They look more of a peach then a pinkish color, and warm undertones are usually described to have a golden color when they tan.

Cool undertones usually are present when there are lighter skinned people that burn but tend to never tan, like a few friends I know. You know who you are. ;) These people have a more pink color opposed to peach, and people with darker skin with reddish undertones such as one with Native American descent. These people are usually described as bronze compared to golden when tanned.

Why am I telling you this?
Uhm. Who to address first. Warm buddies! If you have warm undertones, you will want to wear yellow metals, and cream/ivory looks better vs. white on you. When you go to clothing and makeup, think warm! The sun! These colors look best on you warm people: orange, olive, bronze, brown, yellow, peach, and rust. If you have cool undertones, go with silver metals as I talked about before. White looks better on you folks, cool=snow, yes? Clothing and makeup: You want berry, spring, summery colors. Pastels look good on you also. Just think COOL. Pinks, blues, silver, black, white, blue-purples, and blue-greens will look best on you.

AH. THAT WAS LONG. I hope you enjoyed readers, until next time! :)

Your rambling beauty lover,

Mai
